Schuster, F. Gaudeck This document discusses the statement: SYSTEMS ARE NOT DESIGNED THEY GROW This report will explain the statement and offer an interpretation of it. It will propos a different statement, which will be discussed on the basis of different quotations and real life examples. In this process the connection between design and growth will be shown and put in the context of system development. Definition of systems, design and growth will be made using them as basis for argumentation. Certain case studies are used to stress the arguments and explain why a design is important. Furthermore the topic will be viewed by focusing on IT and the maintenance as well as its attributes expandability, flexibility and maintainability and why it still lacks. This text will proof the statement wrong, even though this kind of thinking is still widely spread. It also will brief mention the reasons.

The purpose of this paper is to examine and to comment the following proposition: “Systems are not designed: they grow” Therefore it is necessary to define the meaning of the terms contained in the proposition and to delimit the scope of the examination. This is done in the part “Definitions”. After that the authors give their statement on the proposition and exemplify their opinions by examining several case studies.
